Why Balenciaga behaves differently to every other house
Balenciaga sells proportion, and proportion is measurable. An oversized hoodie is a number: shoulder drop in centimetres from the neck seam, body length, sleeve length. Once you know your own three numbers, the whole category becomes a comparison exercise rather than a gamble - which is not how most people buy it.
The Triple S is a different problem again. Its identity is a stacked sole built from three visible layers, and a bad stack reads as one thick block. The layers, their boundaries and the way the toe curves are all visible in a side profile, so one photo does most of the work.
Washed and distressed pieces are the final trap. A garment can be artificially aged cheaply, and it can be constructed to look worn properly. Detail frames of hems, cuffs and seam fades are the difference between a texture and a stain.
